Appalachia Rising

Our Mission

We are a nonprofit collaborative organization led by longtime elementary school teacher Karen Campbell Rainer, dedicated to nurturing the hearts and minds of children in the Appalachian mountains through the power of art and education.

In the wake of Hurricane Helene, our mission is to fund innovative art therapy projects that align with the NC curriculum, weaving together creativity, emotional healing, and hands-on scientific learning. From pollinator gardens that teach environmental stewardship to sound garden installations that invite sensory play and expression, we are reimagining what healing and learning can look like for our youngest generation.

We are proud to partner with Art Kit Aid to supply high-quality art kits to children across the region—both in classrooms and at home. And we’re working alongside local artisans and educators to bring nature-based, interactive installations to life.
